Holiday Dress (original design)

Debuted: Christmas 2013

Awards: N/A

I've been wanting to create a holiday-inspired dress for sometime, but I wanted it to be warm enough for the colder weather, and also simple enough to double as a cosplay for a well-known character if I decided to wear it as a Christmas cosplay. This design fit both of those requirements and matched my sketch perfectly!

 How I Made It

I bought three yards of red crushed velvet and red 2-way stretch polycotton, and four yards of white fluffy fabric for trim. I started by cutting all of the pieces I needed twice (this gave me a second dress to use as the lining inside the crushed velvet one). Then I cut the fur trim for the wrists and bottom hem of the dress. I sewed the polycotton dress first, then completed the crushed velvet one. After fitting them together, I added the white fur trim and pinned the dressed together, then sewed them to create one, finished dress.
I had drawn out a cape/bolero as well, so I used the remaining white fur and the reverse side of what was left of the crushed velvet and sewed the two together, creating a lined bolero that I can wear while outdoors. To add a little extra fun, I made two red bows and attached white pom-poms to the loose ends, then sewed one to the bolero and one to the dress. The final piece is simply everything I wanted. And I made the whole thing in one day!
